A gala extravaganza

Program

Horizon Theatre Company

Tonight, we’re thrilled to present an excerpt from our hit recent production of the musical from Broadway and London, AMELIE, based on the popular French film from 2001 and a brief excerpt from our upcoming play LAUGHS IN SPANISH, running May 23-June 22, 2025.

Amélie: The Musical is directed by the creators of Horizon’s hit Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812. Amélie (Anna Dvorak) is a shy and imaginative young waitress living in Paris. With a heart as big as her city, Amelie finds her purpose in secretly improvising small but surprising acts of kindness that bring joy to those in her neighborhood and café. But when a chance at love comes her way with Nino (Jordan Patrick), Amélie realizes that to find happiness she’ll have to risk everything and say what’s in her heart. An ensemble of actor/musicians create the quirky characters in Amelie’s world including Skyler Brown (guitar), Eric Nabeth (accordion), Miro Gomez (cello), Kylie Dickinson (violin), Ruth Mehari (cahone), Eden Mew, Holt McCarley (keyboard, music director).

In Laughs in Spanish, the stakes are high for young Miami gallery owner, Mariana (Ana Miramontes), when art goes missing on the eve of Art Basel. Her artist intern, MFA student Caro (Lorena Guillen Castillo) and Caro’s policeman boyfriend Juan (Marcello Audino) are onsite to help through the panic while also uncovering some surprises of their own. When Mariana’s movie-star mother and a past girl-crush show up, the complications rise in this fast-paced comedy about art and success, love and romance, and mothers and daughters.

We are honored to offer you a couple of songs and a bit of story from a brand-new musical in the making!

Incarceration Plantation: The Musical is a sister and brother’s creative journey, despite the walls that keep them apart. They reflect on more than 30 years of dealing with America’s prison system, its impact, and how systemic racism and the disproportionate sentencing of Black people perpetuates a form of modern slavery. When Dorothy Victoria Bell was 14, her brother Roger Bell II committed a burglary, but was convicted for a murder that occurred after he left the scene. He was sentenced to three life terms after being convinced to take a plea deal. In 2020, he began sharing his poetry with Dorothy, and she helped him through the process of writing a book. Their continued communication and collaboration helped them get through some dark times while offering hope for their future. They are writing a musical!

Inspired by classic musicals like The Wiz, Oklahoma and Mary Poppins, Dorothy adds a spoonful of sugar to make these stories accessible, welcoming and warm. Dorothy explains “I am a singer, composer, musician and empath ready to sing the story out loud so that we can combat the narrative of fear and division through the power of art.” This story is about decades of incarceration, but it shines a light on the possibilities of hope and healing.
